Following the success of the Vignettes Design Series in 2016, the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC) decided to create the city's first Design Week – September 15 - 22.
EEDC was a huge part of our festival last year. 2016 was the first time that Vignettes expanded beyond its one-day Showcase, where teams of visual artists, designers, woodworkers, craftspeople and contractors collaborated together to create unique 8 ft by 8 ft spaces. The Showcase kicked off with our VIP gala, transforming the former Sobey's space on 104th street into a dreamy garden space and an interactive venue big enough to house the incredible designs of 10 Vignettes teams.
In addition to our three-day Showcase, EEDC challenged us to create an experience that integrated another incredible creative industry in Edmonton: the culinary community. We happily took it on.
We were so lucky to work with cherished restaurants along downtown's 104th Street Promenade: Tzin Wine & Tapas, Blue Plate Diner, and The Black Pearl. Through unique collaborations between our Special Projects teams and the heads of these restaurants, we created one-of-a-kind popup dining experiences for Edmontonian foodies that included hand-crafted cocktails, curated four-course meals, and packed conversations with new friends.
Design teams worked together with restaurants to create everything from the art on the walls to the centrepieces on the table and the live performances to play throughout the night, while chefs interpreted the designs into their uniquely crafted menus.
This year, we're going even bigger. With a standalone pop-up restaurant, The Christenson, nestled next to the Vignettes Building (10004 103A Avenue), we're highlighting even more incredible culinary treasures around town.
With the huge success of the Vignettes Design Series, EEDC was motivated to create Edmonton's first Design Week–running from September 15 to September 22–with Vignettes being its cornerstone event. The Vignettes VIP Opening Gala will be the official launch party to Edmonton Design Week, and is now open for the public to purchase their tickets. Dining collaborations are announced regularly, with tickets on sale now. There is limited seating for all pop-ups, so don't wait to experience some of the most unique, creative, and inspiring dining collaborations this city has ever seen. We can't wait for you to join us!
