What started as a simple studio gathering has now organically grown into the foundational event for Edmonton's very first Design Week from September 15-22, 2017.
Back in 2013, Vignettes was a small, intimate gathering of designers from various disciplines coming out to view work created by the University of Alberta's Bachelor of Design graduating class. The goal was to connect promising new talent with industry experts as a way to transition their creativity into the community. The next year, Vignettes focused promoting the talented woodworkers in our city.
Vignettes 3 was the first time we introduced the draft. Through random selection, 8 teams of interior designers, visual artists, craftspeople and woodworkers were brought together to collaborate and co-create blank 8 foot by 8 foot spaces. We wanted to give creatives the opportunity to design without boundaries–and teams certainly did not disappoint.
Surrounded by close to a hundred guests from the industry, friends and family, and the general public, the Showcase was a huge success and helped us connect the design and creative communities in a fun, experimental, and exciting new way.
Then in 2016, we grew Vignettes one step further. The Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC) challenged our team to incorporate another component within Edmonton's creative scene: the culinary community. Read all about our adventure with Vignettes 4 here.
